Smithereens | Storyline:
Smithereens Full Episode: Chris (Andrew Scott) is a taxi driver for the app Hitcher. He goes to a group therapy session in which a mother talks about her daughter’s suicide 18 months prior and the lack of closure it left her with. The mother talks to Chris after the session and they have sex. Afterwards, she makes three attempts at logging into her daughter’s Persona account, an activity she does daily before it locks out the account for 24 hours.
Chris has a Smithereen employee, Jaden (Damson Idris), get into his car. Jaden is heading to the airport and midway Chris takes a different route, claiming there is a road accident ahead. He points a gun at Jaden and makes him tie his hands together. Chris is distressed to find out Jaden is an intern, rather than a higher level employee. He tries to get Jaden into the boot of the car but he protests that he has claustrophobia so Chris lets him sit in the back seat with a bag on his head. A police officer spots the car and follows it with her colleague. Chris pulls over and then speeds off as the police officer starts to get out the car. The police car chases behind until Chris swerves into a field to avoid hitting two teenagers on bikes. As the police officer approaches, Chris waves the gun and threatens to shoot Jaden.
Black Mirror Season 5 Episode 2 (Smithereens) Review:
It was a thriller short film. Plain and simple. The people being preoccupied with their phones subplot didnt really add much to it accept a device for the main characters motivation, and it just felt really forced and uninspired. Had nothing to do with the science fiction aspects associated with black mirror. This is just a story on how reality has been the last decade since Smart phones became normalized in society. Still a great short in its own right tho. The acting by the main is what holds it all together.
But in retrospect, compared to the early seasons of BM. It doesn’t hold up at all.. But its by far the best of the 3 from this season…
