fear and desire 2019 review : If Fear and Desire is uneven and sometimes reveals an experimental instead of a refined exterior, its over-all effect is entirely deserve the sincere effort put into it.

While the surrealist, pseudo-Buñuelian setup of Fear and Desire as a barebones, modernist imagining of a war film immediately impresses itself in its novelty, the constraints of Kubrick’s $50,000 micro budget and sparse, skeleton crew are only too apparent because the film begins to wander, adrift like its own marooned GIs.

Inspired by the Korean War , which broke call at 1950, Kubrick decided to form a war movie, and enlisted his highschool buddy Howard Sackler to write down the script (Sackler would later continue to win the Pulitzer Prize for his 1969 play, the good great white hope , and is probably best known by movie fans for writing Quint’s USS Indianapolis speech in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws).
